Since 1949, May has been designated as Mental Health
May is Stroke Awareness Month, a crucial time to educate ourselves about the signs, symptoms, and prevention of stroke. Every second counts when it comes to this, and knowing what to do can save lives.
Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Stroke
1. Sudden numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body.
2. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding speech.
3. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes.
4. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance, or coordination.
5. Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
If you suspect someone, remember to act F.A.S.T.:
Face drooping: Ask the person to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
Arm weakness: Ask the person to raise both arms. Is one arm weak or numb?
Speech difficulty: Ask the person to repeat a simple sentence. Are the words slurred or hard to understand?
Time to call emergency services: If you observe any of these signs, call emergency services immediately.
Preventing Stroke at Home
While some risk factors for this, such as age and family history, cannot be controlled, many lifestyle changes can significantly reduce your risk:
Maintain a Healthy Diet: Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Limit salt, sugar, and saturated fats.
Exercise Regularly: Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
Monitor Blood Pressure: High blood pressure is a major risk factor for stroke. Keep it under control with a healthy lifestyle and medication if prescribed.
Quit Smoking: Smoking significantly increases your risk of stroke. Seek support to quit smoking if needed.
Limit Alcohol Consumption: Drink in moderation – no more than one drink per day for women and two for men.
